DAVID "FLIP" RODRIGUEZ

DAVID "FLIP" RODRIGUEZ

DAVID "FLIP" RODRIGUEZ

We recently had the opportunity to have the seven time fan favorite Flip Rodriguez from NBC's American Ninja Warrior on our Substance of Service Show.

While Rodriguez did not talk about much he did share his view on Child Abuse & Bullying and how free-running is a way of expressing oneself.

Later in his career, Rodriguez had an emotional departure a few seasons back on American Ninja Warrior. Rodriguez opened up and started sharing his personal story that inspired the iconic mask worn every time he competed.

“Growing up, one of the hardest things to talk about was sexual abuse and that’s something he, personally, went through as a young kid and "it was done by my ((Rodriguez)) own father of all people.” Rodriguez says, on-air.

Since the mask hid the Ninja Warrior's emotions while completing the course, it symbolized how he hid his pain through his smile when he was younger. Rodriguez hopes that his story can continue to inspire people around the world to speak up if they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation.

“I am so blessed to be on this platform to inspire the youth. A lot of people have reached out to me to say that it was inspiring to see someone in my light talk about sexual abuse and it gave them the courage to be able to talk about it too,” Rodriguez said. “I’ve had a few families reach out to tell me that their kids opened up to them after I shared my experience and now their abusers are going to jail for a very long time.” Thanks David "Flip" Rodriguez.

Theresa Nance is an ordained minister and pastor of the Theresa Nance Ministries, Inc., a outreach ministry and we here at The Substance of Service Show got to interview her firsthand. She is also senior pastor at the Church by the Side of the Road, located in the Township of Willingboro, NJ. Rev. Nance is a former columnist at the "Herald News" and currently writes columns for the "Positive Community & Christian Observer". She was the first woman to head the Chief Chaplaincy position at the Passic County Jail, in the city of Paterson, NJ and from that experience she established an outreach support system for women released from the penal system. An adjunct professor at Passic Community College, the mother of two children, grandmother of a darling little girl, and a social activist for over 30 years shows her nature of love, commitment and more.

. In the 1990s, Rev. Nance entered a nationwide contest sponsored by “The Chicago Sun-Times” to replace well-known advice columnist Ann Landers and was one of 22 finalists in a field of 12,000. She produced a documentary titled, “A Story Seldom Told,” in 2000, depicting the lives of a group of women housed at the Passaic County Jail. Excerpts were shown on “The 700 Club.” And, Rev. Nance was profiled in “The Record” and “The New Jersey Edition of “The New York Times” regarding the film. “A Story Seldom Told” was shown at the African Diaspora New York Film Festival and another film festival sponsored by The New York chapter of The Links. She, and two women from that documentary, has made presentations to audiences at Sarah Lawrence College, the Felician College, Montclair State University, and also on local cable television channels. Rev. Nance is the former coordinator of a mentoring program for the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention out of Washington, D.C.  VVA’s goals are to promote and support the full range of issues important to Vietnam veterans, to create a new identity for this generation of veterans, and to change public perception of Vietnam veterans. VVA strives to achieve the following:

  • Aggressively advocate on issues important to veterans
  • Seek full access to quality health care for veterans
  • Identify the full range of disabling injuries and illnesses incurred during military service
  • Hold government agencies accountable for following laws mandating veterans health care
  • Create a positive public perception of Vietnam veterans
  • Seek the fullest possible accounting of America’s POWs and MIAs
  • Support the next generation of America’s war veterans
  • Serve our communities

The VVA flag is an elegant presentation of American veterans’ service in the Vietnam War. VVA flags are proudly displayed at all Vietnam Veterans of America meetings and functions and in Veterans Affairs Committee chambers of both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.

  • The background color is golden yellow, the primary color of the flag of the Republic of Vietnam and the ribbon of the Vietnam Service Medal.
  • In the “hoist” of the flag, the seventeen brown stars, arranged in three vertical rows, represent the seventeen official campaigns of the Vietnam War.
  • The insignia of VVA, including the identification inscription Vietnam Veterans of America is centered between the campaign stars and the “fly” of the flag. The VVA insignia incorporates the design of the flag of the Republic of Vietnam and the ribbon of the Vietnam Service Medal, which was awarded to all men and women who served in Southeast Asia and the contiguous waters or air space there-over from March 15, 1962, through January 28, 1973.
  • Surrounding the insignia, in natural colors, is a wreath containing a laurel branch and a sheaf of rice stalks. The two are tied together at the base with a strand of black barbed wire. The rice represents Southeast Asia, and the laurel signifies honor to all who served there. The black barbed wire serves as a reminder of the POWs and MIAs who are still unaccounted for.

While we learn a lot about the Vietnam War in school I, Bishop Junior, got to learn it first hand from 4 strong minded and well ground survivors from the war itself on the Substance of Service Show.

TICK-TOCK AND ITS MANY DISCOVERIES The Substance of Service Show had the opportunity to interview one of Tick-Tock’s very own dancer’s, who has been able to entertain thousands of followers while creating various dances out of his own style. I had the opportunity to meet Darion on his Instagram due to a mistaken instant message that was actually funny. I personally made an error by saving one of his audios and because of that I sent an apology which later turned into a chance to interview him. While speaking to him, I was able to learn some of his life history, so I invited him on the show so that my team and I can interview him. He is a true inspiration and survival. The Substance of Service Show is looking to interview Darion about his life experiences. This interview spoke about his life journey and how he chose dancing as his therapy. We were honored to hear his story.
After the interview, we were able to speak about the opportunity to invite him back onto the show. Well, the great news is, he will be a regular guest co-host on the show starting Saturday June 05, 2021 from Noon - 4:00 pm
